I’ve come to realize that wellness is a multi-faceted journey, and I’m always striving to integrate different pieces that make me feel whole. It’s a work in progress, and while I aim for discipline, I know the path will never be perfectly linear. But over time, I’ve discovered a few essentials that truly support my mental, physical, and emotional well-being.
1) Sleep: The Cornerstone of My Health
Let me start with sleep. Oh, how important it is! I’ve always known that sleep is crucial, but I didn’t always prioritize it like I should. For the longest time, getting to bed at a decent hour was an afterthought. But when I finally commit to my 8 hours of sleep, it feels like a game changer. I can’t even explain it—when I wake up after a restful night, it’s as though the world looks different. I’m ready to take on whatever comes my way.
I’ve noticed that without adequate sleep, my mood dips, my focus fades, and I’m less patient. But when I sleep well, I’m able to handle stress with calm and clarity. Sleep is not just rest; it’s recovery for my body and mind. Every night, I try to make it a ritual—no screens, dimmed lights, and perhaps a cup of herbal tea before bed. It’s my moment to unwind, letting go of the day and preparing for a fresh start.
2) Meditation: My Time to Pause and Turn Inward
Meditation is probably the most essential practice I’ve embraced. Honestly, it feels like my personal anchor. Each day, I carve out 20 minutes to simply pause, breathe, and turn inward. I combine breathwork with my meditation, and when I do, it’s like my whole being takes a deep sigh of relief. My mind gets quieter, and everything feels more aligned.
During these quiet moments, I find the peace I need to process my thoughts and emotions. Meditation helps me release whatever anxiety or stress I may be carrying, and I can literally feel my body relaxing. It’s fascinating, really. In those 20 minutes, my body gets the equivalent rest of 4 hours of sleep! Every time I sit down to meditate, I’m reminded of how much better I feel—more grounded, more focused, and simply a better version of myself.
If you haven’t started a meditation practice, I can’t recommend it enough. Seriously—if you’re looking for a simple way to transform your life, just DM me and I’ll share some tips to help you get started.
3) Exercise: Building Strength, Inside and Out
Now, exercise… I won’t lie, it’s probably the one thing I’m never truly “in the mood” for. Most days, I’d rather stay on the couch, but I’ve made a conscious effort to prioritize it, especially strength training. Yoga and stretching are more my style, especially the calming, slower movements. But this past year, I made a pact with myself to incorporate 3 days of strength training into my week.
Strength training hasn’t just made me physically stronger; it’s made me mentally stronger too. The more I lift, the more I realize that I can overcome discomfort.
It’s a reminder that I’m capable of more than I give myself credit for. The best part? I can feel the difference! As we get older, we naturally lose muscle mass, but I’m actively working to slow that down. Strength training isn’t just about the muscles—it’s about reclaiming power over my own body. And let’s be real, lifting that suitcase into the overhead bin now feels like a breeze!
4) Positive Community: The Power of Connection
One of the greatest gifts I’ve ever given myself is surrounding myself with a positive community. There’s something magical about having people who truly cheer you on—and being able to do the same for them. I’m incredibly grateful for my tribe, my rock-solid pillars who lift me up when life gets tough. There’s nothing like having cheerleaders in your corner, and it’s equally rewarding to cheer others on.
Having that positive energy around me makes such a difference in how I show up in the world. My friends, my mentors, my colleagues—they’re all part of a community that supports me, challenges me, and encourages me to grow. It’s a beautiful reminder that we don’t have to do this alone. We’re all in this together, and there’s so much power in that shared energy.
5) Gratitude: Shifting My Perspective
And then, there’s gratitude. When I focus on what I’m grateful for, it’s like a shift happens in my energy. Gratitude pulls me out of any grumbling or negativity and shifts my eyes toward all the things that are going right in my life. It’s so easy to get caught up in what’s wrong or what we don’t have, but when I practice gratitude, I remind myself of all the blessings I’ve been given.
Gratitude is more than just a feeling; it’s a mindset that colors the way I view the world. It nurtures my spirit and fosters a deep sense of connection to others. It fuels my desire to serve, to give, and to show up in ways that matter. Each day, I make a point to reflect on at least three things I’m thankful for, and it’s amazing how much this simple act can change my entire day.
Picture this: a fresh-faced student in the U.S. embarking on a new journey after running a successful clothing business. Imagine going from serving coffee as a barista to handling contracts worth thousands of dollars. Envision inspiring my twins to clean their room to guiding corporate executives to clear their minds of stress, all while maneuvering life’s pivots like a seasoned salsa dancer.
As a daughter, I learned resilience from watching my mother balance her dreams with family. As a wife, I discovered that partnership is like a dance, sometimes you lead, sometimes you follow, but it’s always a shared victory. Motherhood brought a whirlwind of emotions, unconditional love, patience, and the relentless pursuit of balance. Being a daughter-in-law taught me empathy, bridging generations and traditions with respect and unity. As a meditation and leadership instructor for over two decades with college students, I witnessed their uncertain steps turn into confident strides, guiding them as they discovered their footing.
