“What’s something you’d never think of doing?”
“Nothing. I’m pretty open to anything.”
Billy didn’t flinch, and after some gentle prodding, I finally caved.
“Okay, fine. A solo trip.”
“What’s stopping you?”
“Absolutely nothing,” I said quickly. “I just… don’t feel like it.”
But the question had already wormed its way into my mind, lingering long after our conversation ended. Was it really about not feeling like it? Or was I scared?
Scared to be alone?
Scared of silence?
Scared of discovering parts of me I wasn’t ready to meet?
The next time we spoke, I found myself asking, “Billy, ask me again.”
“Rashmi, what do you need to make it happen?”
By the time we parted, I had a plan. Flights. Accommodations. A date. The commitment felt massive. Terrified, I booked it. Once I did, it was as if I’d handed the reins over to something bigger than myself. The Universe took over, pulling me into this wild, magical experience.
And here I am, on my last day, feeling the perfect goodbye to a chapter I didn’t know I would write.
What did I learn on this trip? Everything and nothing that I can fully put into words. But let me try to describe the feeling.
I feel expansive, like I’ve outgrown the boundaries of what I thought was possible. I feel both invisible and seen. Grounded and limitless. Ordinary and extraordinary.
But most importantly, I experienced what it means to pause and just be. To exist fully in the present. To love and be loved. To say yes, even when it terrifies me. To be a gift to myself and receive every gift life has to offer. To trust in the goodness of others and the goodness within me. To be the missing piece that completes the puzzle.
Each of us is that special missing piece.
So here’s my advice: Don’t wait for the perfect moment. It will never come. Just go. Do the thing that scares you. Claim the adventure that’s been calling your name.
When you do, you’ll realize it’s not just about the trip. It’s about becoming the person you were always meant to be—beautifully YOU.
Be bold. Be brave. Be bodacious. Do you. Be you. For you.
This wasn’t just about ticking a destination off my list. It was about pushing myself beyond the comfort zone, where life feels safe and predictable, but also limits growth. Venturing outside of that familiar bubble isn’t easy, but it’s where the magic happens.
Psychologists define the comfort zone as a psychological state where we feel at ease and in control. It serves its purpose in reducing stress, but the longer we stay there, the more we shut the door on the expansive experiences waiting for us.
Growth happens when we venture just beyond that comfort zone, into what’s known as the zone of proximal development—where challenges stretch our capabilities without overwhelming us. It’s a space where we can tap into our potential and see what we’re truly capable of.
Taking on something as big as a solo trip—or any daunting challenge— forces us to embrace discomfort. We stretch, build resilience, and redefine what we thought possible. The more we challenge ourselves, the more we grow into powerful versions of ourselves.
This stretch is where new doors open, doors that were once closed by fear or hesitation. It’s not just about the adventure. It’s about rediscovering and expanding who we are.
So, lean into what scares you. The adventure that calls your name is waiting for you just beyond your comfort zone. Embrace it. Because that’s where the journey to becoming beautifully YOU begins.
Picture this: a fresh-faced student in the U.S. embarking on a new journey after running a successful clothing business. Imagine going from serving coffee as a barista to handling contracts worth thousands of dollars. Envision inspiring my twins to clean their room to guiding corporate executives to clear their minds of stress, all while maneuvering life’s pivots like a seasoned salsa dancer.
As a daughter, I learned resilience from watching my mother balance her dreams with family. As a wife, I discovered that partnership is like a dance, sometimes you lead, sometimes you follow, but it’s always a shared victory. Motherhood brought a whirlwind of emotions, unconditional love, patience, and the relentless pursuit of balance. Being a daughter-in-law taught me empathy, bridging generations and traditions with respect and unity. As a meditation and leadership instructor for over two decades with college students, I witnessed their uncertain steps turn into confident strides, guiding them as they discovered their footing.
